Health Services

The Health Services Division

FAME Corporation’s Health Services Division is dedicated to bringing better health to all Californians, with a specific focus on the local communities we serve. Low-income communities of color in urban Los Angeles suffer some of the worse health outcomes in the nation on several dimensions, and experience far poorer health overall and shorter life expectancies than their neighbors less than 10 miles away. FAC’s efforts seek to redress this imbalance through a combination of education and environmental change that targets the inner city neighborhoods of South Los Angeles, with impact that reaches far beyond.

Champion Empowerment Program

Champions for Change

Funded by the Network for a Healthy California’s Local Food and Nutrition Education Program, the Champion Empowerment Program is a nutrition education, physical activity and community engagement program managed by FAC and offered at a series of public housing venues in Los Angeles County in 2012 and 2013.

Residents of Los Angeles’ public housing developments experience a wide range of challenges associated with chronic poverty in an urban setting. These problems include poorer health outcomes, lower skill levels, significant economic insecurity, and reduced access to quality goods and services. The Champion Empowerment Program seeks to address several of these concerns directly and indirectly by focusing on health education and empowering individuals to make healthier lifestyle choices to improve their wellbeing at personal, household and community-wide levels. Each year, the Champion Empowerment Program recruits up to 50 individuals to complete a 40-hour training program to be educated in the fundamentals of nutrition education and physical fitness, and receive training in order to serve as healthy lifestyle ambassadors in their community.

Body & Soul

FAME Assistance Corporation is working with the California Department of Public Health and its Network for a Healthy California campaign to implement the Body & Soul program in Los Angeles.
Body & Soul is a health program for African American churches that encourages members to eat a healthy diet to promote good health and reduce the risk for many diseases.

Churches that have adopted Body & Soul have a pastor that is committed and involved with the program; provide church activities that promote healthy eating; provide a church environment that promotes healthy eating; and provide peer counseling that motivates church members to eat a healthy diet. The churches also reach out to their communities and provide nutrition and health education.

FAME Assistance Corporation provides support to its network of partner churches who have adopted Body & Soul and assists them in successfully implementing the program.

Tobacco Control Program

Tobacco Control Program

The Tobacco Control Program at FAME Assistance Corporation is a grant funded by the Los Angeles County Department of Public health to promote smoke-free environments in different cities throughout LA County.

Currently, FAME staff is working closely with City Councilmember’s and policy makers to pass an ordinance regulating drifting secondhand smoke in multi-unit housing complexes in both Culver City and Carson. Secondhand smoke is the third leading preventable cause of death in the United States and annually kills 65,000 non-smoking Americans.

In order to pass this policy, Fame staff has built a strong coalition of members and organizations passionate about tobacco prevention, has conducted over 1,000 surveys for data collection, conducts presentations for local organizations, recruits individual constituents to speak at city council meetings, creates collateral materials for marketing the campaign and many other activities.

FAME Assistance Corporation works on this campaign in collaboration with many well-renowned organizations including but not limited to: The American Lung Association, The American Heart Association, The American Cancer Society, SAFE- Smoke Free Air for Everyone, Breathe California, and the Tobacco Control and Prevention Program and the Los Angeles Department of Public Health.
